TEACHING PRACTICE

The Heart of my SEA Teacher Experience

Classroom Setup

My teaching practice at Global Prestasi School (GPS) was the highlight of my SEA Teacher journey. It gave me the chance to see how Indonesian classrooms work, to learn from experienced mentors, and to try teaching in a real setting. My practice went through different stages that allowed me to gradually immerse myself in the teaching process.

Observation of Classes

During my first days, I spent time observing my cooperating teachers as they facilitated their lessons. I focused on how they introduced new topics, how they encouraged students to participate, and how they managed the class flow. I noticed that the students were very active, and the teachers always tried to make lessons interactive. These observations helped me understand the rhythm of the classroom and gave me insights into strategies I could also apply when it was my turn to teach.

Participation in Guiding Student Activities

After observing, I began to assist in guiding student activities. This included helping students during seatwork, encouraging them to participate in group activities, and clarifying instructions when needed. I also supported them in doing simple tasks, which gave me a chance to build rapport with the learners. These moments taught me the importance of patience and encouragement, especially for students who needed extra guidance. One unique part of my practice was experiencing how Indonesian schools use the “garis buku lima” (a five-line notebook). This type of notebook is used to help students improve their handwriting and maintain neatness in their work. I had the chance to check and review students’ notebooks, ensuring their writing followed the correct lines and standards.

Teaching Demonstrations

Finally, I had the opportunity to teach my own lessons. This was both nerve-wracking and exciting, but it became the most rewarding part of my practice. I prepared lesson plans that included interactive activities, visual aids, and simple discussions to engage the students.

  • Introduction of lessons: I often started with a motivation activity like a picture or a short question to spark curiosity.

  • Discussion: I guided students step by step, asking questions along the way to keep them involved instead of just lecturing.

  • Activities: I encouraged students to work and answer the available activities on their workbook with an ample of time, which helped them become independent and generate ideas on their own.

  • Assessment: I asked them to answer simple exercises or share their answers aloud, which showed me if they understood the lesson.

One of my favorite moments was seeing the students smile and participate eagerly when they enjoyed the activities. It reminded me that learning becomes more meaningful when it’s interactive and fun.
